What helps you choose
- Compare the same scope and final finish.
- Identify outstanding choices and provisional amounts.
- Discuss changes before they are carried out.
Compare the descriptions side by side
Check the work, materials, payments, terms and guarantees in the offer. Ask what is excluded. A provisional allowance is an estimated amount: ask what it covers and how the final adjustment works.
| Component | Ask for both proposal A and B | Note the difference |
|---|---|---|
| Scope of work | Are the components and quantities the same? | Missing or differently described work |
| Products and installation | Who supplies and who installs? | Product choices and work you must arrange separately |
| Final finish | What will actually be finished? | For example, painting or adjoining finishes |
| Price and provisional items | Is VAT clear and which amounts are provisional? | Assumptions, exclusions and outstanding decisions |
Why your choices make a difference
A different layout, extra connections or a different finish changes the scope. Group wishes into essential, optional and still to discuss. This helps develop a more focused proposal.
For example, you want new bathroom tiles and a vanity. In one proposal you choose and supply them yourself; another includes the products. Write down these differences before judging only the total price.
Record changes to the scope
ACM ConsuWijzer explains that additional work depends, among other things, on the pricing agreement and reason for the extra work. Before a change, ask how it affects scope, price and scheduling. Keep the agreements with the proposal.
ACM’s general explanation helps clarify the concepts. A dispute about your own agreement requires assessment of the actual documents.
Create a budget overview you can discuss
Compare the proposal with purchases and work you will arrange yourself. List open decisions separately. This shows which parts are settled and which need development. An honest overview is more useful than a total that conceals unknowns.
Bring your main questions to the conversation. Have differences explained before adjusting your preferences, and keep the chosen version so the basis for your decision remains clear.

Avoid these three pitfalls
- Comparing only the bottom-line price.
- Treating a provisional amount as a final product selection.
- Having a changed wish carried out without discussing its consequences.
